What happens on a giraffe feeding experience?
It’s an exclusive opportunity to come face to face (nose to nose!) with our giraffes and feed them browse (that’s tree branches to you and me!). You’ll be accompanied by a giraffe keeper, and you’ll be standing underneath our majestic giraffes inside their enclosure.
You’ll be welcomed by one of our giraffe keepers and after a short briefing you’ll enter the giraffe enclosure and you’ll feed our giraffes. Get ready for a bit of giraffe slobber!
There is nothing quite like a giraffe leaning down to take food from your hand. A giraffe will never seem so tall. This is also your chance to ask our expert giraffe keepers all about our herd. Why do they have black tongues anyway?
Your giraffe feeding experience will last at least 20 minutes. It includes a souvenir cuddly toy giraffe to take home so you can remember your special day.
Need to know
Giraffe experiences must be booked in advance. There’s one session per day for a maximum of two people.
This experience usually takes place below Giraffe Heights walkway so is in view of the general public.
It may take place inside the giraffe house if the weather is bad.
Our giraffe experience is only suitable for those aged 8 or over.

Meg was the animal keeper and she was fantastic; knowledgeable, patient and really ensured we had a fascinating insight into their lives. Our daughter, Rhian, has been very fond of giraffes since she was tiny. She adopts the giraffes each year as part of her birthday gift but this year we decided to also get a giraffe feeding experience for her to enjoy and she loved every minute. We booked for our son, Owen, who wants to be a zoo keeper. He had an amazing time feeding Rian the giraffe. He got to ask questions and the zoo keeper was really kind and helpful in letting Owen know how to become a keeper when he’s older. It was a lovely experience to watch. Also impressed with the size of the toy giraffe he was given as part of the feeding experience. Great day out.

The experience was absolutely incredible one might even say spiritual being so close to the giraffe and feeding him. They said the zoo keeper was amazing, they couldn’t speak highly enough of her (I believe her name was Megan/Bethan), she was so informative and lovely. A really lovely experience, which was only made better by the keeper who was clearly passionate about the animals under their care. I asked LOTS of questions and all were answered thoroughly. I also appreciated that interaction with the giraffe was not forced and very much led by what they were in the mood for. Animal welfare clearly put first!
