Introducing....Glyndwr the First Welsh Rhino • Folly Farm

With help from BBC’s The One Show, we’ve finally revealed the name of our baby rhino.

Introducing…Glyndŵr, the first Welsh rhino!

The name was suggested by many of our fans on social media and via email, in recognition of our founding director Glyndŵr Williams.

Glyn’s lightbulb moment whilst walking his cows across the Tenby road to his milking parlour on the other side saw the farm diversify into a tourist attraction in 1988. And in 2015 Glyn was the driving force behind us joining the Eastern black rhino captive reintroduction breeding programme. So, it was an obvious choice for our calf born here at Folly Farm, the first rhino to be in Wales, to carry his name.

“There was never any doubt that the first rhino to be born in Wales would have a Welsh name. He’s an ambassador for his species and wherever he ends up, either furthering the breeding programme in other European zoos or being returned to Africa, he’ll always fly the flag for Wales.

“No-one was more passionate about bringing rhinos to Wales than Glyn, so we’re thrilled to our calf bears his full name Glyndŵr, a strong, Welsh name steeped in history.” – Tim Morphew, zoo curator

BBC’s The One Show kindly helped us reveal our baby rhino’s name on air, with Alex Jones, a proud Welsh girl herself declaring it a strong Welsh name! She also told viewers that she’s been coming to Folly Farm for years!

The One Show’s Mike Dilger helped our keepers reveal Glyndŵr’s name on air.
